Mud tubes, hollow-sounding wood and discarded wings — how to spot termites before they reach your furniture frames.
Subterranean termites, the species responsible for almost all structural damage in Maharashtra, live in soil and travel to timber through sealed mud tunnels. They never expose themselves to open air, so damage is usually advanced by the time it becomes obvious. Catching the early signs is the difference between a soil treatment and replacing a wardrobe.
Termites enter at ground contact points. Inspect the underside of wooden wardrobes standing on the floor, the back of built-in furniture against an external wall, the door frame nearest the bathroom, and any timber near a plumbing chase — persistent damp draws them in.
In a flat, the risk is highest on lower floors and in units sharing a wall with soil, a garden or a duct. High-floor flats are not immune: termites travel through wall cavities and shared columns.
Anti-termite treatment for an existing building means drilling small holes at floor–wall junctions at fixed intervals, injecting a termiticide emulsion into the soil beneath, and sealing the holes. Infested timber is treated directly. The chemical barrier stops termites reaching the structure through the soil, and a well-executed treatment is typically warranted for several years.
Over-the-counter products only kill the termites you can see. The colony is in the soil, so without a continuous injected barrier the workers simply reroute and continue feeding.
Holes are around 12 mm, drilled along the floor–wall junction at set spacing, then filled and sealed. They are barely visible after the work and usually hidden by skirting.
A correctly injected soil barrier in an existing building typically gives several years of protection. Ask for the warranty period in writing before the work starts.
