Proofing beats poison. Where rodents get in, what the droppings tell you, and why bait alone rarely solves it.
Droppings tell you most of what you need. Small, rice-grain sized pellets scattered widely point to house mice. Larger, capsule-shaped droppings concentrated along one route point to rats. Rats follow fixed runs against walls and leave dark greasy smears where their fur rubs; mice roam more randomly.
A mouse passes through a gap the width of a pencil and a young rat through one the size of a two-rupee coin. Almost every entry is a service opening rather than a door.
Poison reduces a population but does nothing about the opening that let it in — a new group moves in through the same route within weeks. Effective rodent control is proofing first, then trapping or baiting to clear what is already inside. Inside living areas, snap traps and glue-free mechanical traps are preferred over poison, because a rodent that dies inside a cavity creates an odour problem that lasts weeks.
We avoid loose poison inside living areas. Where bait is necessary it goes in locked, tamper-resistant stations placed outside or in service areas that pets cannot reach.
This is exactly why interior control uses traps rather than poison. If it happens, the carcass must be located and removed; odour neutralisers only mask the problem.
